What is a gorilla permit?
A gorilla permit is a document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority(UWA) which allows you to see a habituated gorilla family on you Uganda gorilla trekking safari.
Booking your gorilla permit
The gorilla permit issued allows you trek gorillas in any of the four sections of Bwindi impenetrable national park. These include Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the East, then Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. For Mgahinga gorilla national park there is only one gorilla group(the Nyakagezi group), so your permit allows you to trek them. Permits issued by UWA per day are 160 for gorilla trekking and 4 for the gorilla habituation experience.
Booking my gorilla permit; The best way to book a Uganda gorilla permit is to register through a tour operator/ company in Uganda. After identifying your travel dates, contact a tour operator so as to book your permit for you. What you need is to present your full names, and passport details as required by Uganda Wildlife Authority. The details help us to determine your eligibility since trekking gorillas is for people ages 15 years and above.
Your tour operator then checks availability with the UWA if permits are available on such dates you provided. If your dates are not available you will be required to alter your dates. This therefore requires you to book your gorilla permit as first as possible. The most suitable time frame is probably 6 months before your travel due to high demand for gorilla permits in Uganda. If dates are available your operator goes on ahead to book your gorilla permits either for Bwindi in Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma or Nkuringo sections or Mgahinga. A full payment for the permit will be charged for your booking.
What about doing it myself; You can contact the Uganda headquarters via phone call or email. In most cases, they mostly take some time to respond so the fastest way is to use a tour operator.
