Ziwa rhino sanctuary was founded by the Uganda wildlife authority and Rhino fund Uganda to re-introduce rhinos in Uganda through breeding them and later taking them to the wild. Rhinos had become extinct in Uganda national parks due to poaching in the 1980s.
Ziwa rhino sanctuary currently houses about 20 rhinos and is the only place in Uganda you can track them on foot and come close to them in the wild. Apart from rhinos, the sanctuary also hosts a variety of mammal species including kobs, antelopes, hippos, tortoises, crocodiles among others with a bird list of about 300 bird species including the rare shoebill.
